 MY STORY & EXPERIENCE

I took my first pottery class in high school. Once I started throwing, I was instantly hooked and spent as much time as possible at the potter's wheel. While attending Appalachian State University, I continued to throw and was fortunate enough to be able to use a studio that was in the same building as many of my course work classes. Utilizing the Craft Enrichment courses offered by the studio, I was able to work along-side local experienced potters who shared their great skill and knowledge. The studio was equipped with both electric and gas kilns. I was able to familiarize myself with both types of firing. My sophomore year of college, I took my summer savings and purchased a wheel and electric kiln. I became interested in the history of pottery. So naturally I needed to go to Seagrove, North Carolina and meet the masters.

Being drawn to the history and aesthetic of Seagrove pottery, I decided to seek an apprenticeship there following my graduation from ASU in May, 2017. After reaching out to several master potters in Seagrove, I was granted an apprenticeship with fifth generation Seagrove potter, Chad Brown. Chad allowed me to assist with his wood-fired kiln construction, as well as, throw and make glazes in his shop. Working with Chad was a great experience and afforded me the opportunity to expand my understanding of the process and importance of natural aspects of creating authentic pieces. While working with Chad I was introduced to a number of master potters such as Mark Hewitt, Ben Owen III, and David Stuempfle. Having met and fired with so many of my pottery idols was truly amazing and made me want to pursue a career in pottery even more.

Upon finishing up my apprenticeship with master potter Chad Brown I was invited to do an apprenticeship with master potter Mark Hewitt. It was a dream come true to continue my journey with pottery and to learn from someone as talented and knowledgeable as Mark Hewitt. While working with Mark and his other apprentice Stillman, my horizons broadened and I learned so much more than I had ever expected. While at Mark's I learned throwing techniques, glaze and clay formulations, how to fire his Anagama wood-fired kiln, and so much more. I am looking forward to establishing my own pottery and implementing all I have learned using the skills and knowledge this apprenticeship afforded me.

Since finishing up my apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt I have gotten married to my best friend and girlfriend of 7 years. We are excited for the future and plan on buying our first home soon and establishing Will Baskin Pottery. It is my hope that I will be able to construct a wood-fired kiln of my own in the near future. All proceeds from this online shop will go toward making our dream a reality. Thank you for supporting Will Baskin Pottery!
